When I was in my 20’s, I believed that everything happened for the highest good. So I looked for (and found) opportunities in whatever showed up. My motto was keep the faith, stay focused, feet on the ground, and move ahead no matter what.

When I was in my 30’s, I said that I was the source of what happened in my life. I was 100 % accountable for any circumstances good or bad that cropped up. My motto was create what you want, not what you don’t want. Give up blame, take 100% accountability, and persevere no matter what.

When I was in my 40’s, I said that nothing real could be threatened and every problem could be solved. My motto was focus on what’s possible, tell the truth with love. Listen generously, share your vision, keep your word, and never give up no matter what.

When I was in my 50’s, I first understood that not everything was inside of my control. I said find an expert and bring awareness to what you do each day. My motto was stop pretending, make a plan, pay attention to details, seize the moment, and follow through no matter what.

When I hit 60, I started questioning all of it, and discovered a common thread through the ages. I laughed at how much I thought I knew. It wasn’t just Steven Hawking looking for the unifying principle. It’s every one of us who asks why am I here, who am I? And then comes up with an answer to live their life by.

Now I have more questions than answers. Not so much who I am or why I’m here. But an indelible question mark that twinkles like a neon sign, and keeps me looking, expanding into universes beyond the limits of my thinking, into the unknown of a vast expanse of untested and undiscovered territory.

And my motto has again evolved.

Don’t get so caught up in what you’re doing that you ignore what matters most. Discover your true course, and keep on keeping on no matter what.
